ABSTRACT

Analyzing and planning for transportation is among the most quantitative and technical of the planning specialties. A community's transportation system is much more than just the means by which people travel from Point A to Point B. A well-functioning transportation system provides both internal integration—linking a community or region's residents and activities—and external connection with the outside world. The design of a community's transportation system can have a profound effect on the quantity and quality of its housing. A neighbourhood that is divided or separated from the rest of the community by a new or expanded road will likely experience a decline in housing values. Transportation planning requires a variety of data. The planner will have to complete an inventory of existing conditions of transportation networks. More advanced transportation planning efforts may make use of census transportation planning products, which include special tabulations of census data for transportation planning.
