ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book has examined the earlier obstacles, the evolution of legal frameworks, official statistics and the media presentations of Chinese-foreign marriage in the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) between 1979 and 2011. However, other media reports described celebrity Chinese-foreign marriages as romantic fairy-tales, and constructed Chinese celebrities as role models who entered into intercultural marriages for reasons of 'love' rather than socio-economic advancement. In analysing media coverage of Chinese-foreign marriage in the PRC, this book highlights three issues that reflect both processes of social change in reform-era China and China's enhanced status in the world. Such marriages are presented in recent media reports as highlighting an altered pattern of marriage-related mobility. The book concludes by summarizing the main insights of the preceding chapters, and outlines some potential avenues for further research on the subject of Chinese-foreign marriage.
