ABSTRACT

Genetic engineering and biotechnology bring this overview of three postwar strategic technologies to a close. The genetic engineering ‘revolution’ is very much ongoing. People have been working, witnessing, living and disputing the genetic engineering of microbes, plants, animals and humans, whole or in parts, for the last 40 years. It remains history in the making. In this chapter I address three questions:

• How did the biotechnology movement come about? • When, how and over what issues did public resistance arise? • What was the response of the biotechnology community to this

resistance?
