ABSTRACT

In Uttarakhand, the main occupation in the villages is agriculture. The Himalayan states are often referred to as the states on the "Money Order Economy", i.e., the local economy depends on the money sent by its migrated men in the cities. According to a The Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organization (HESCO) survey, in addition to employment opportunities, other reasons for migration are poor education and medical facilities in the Himalayan villages. In the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, about 24 kinds of fruits, flowers, buds, and leaves are used for human consumption. The animals consume about 15 kinds of fodder. Although forests and soil are losing their natural qualities, as of now, life in these areas still largely depends on natural resources. Comparing HESCO with other NGOs, Dr. Joshi mentioned that HESCO is not an NGO but a family in which all personal matters of each member are jointly discussed.
