ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 focuses on both the memorial practices and the reactions that the memorial commemorations and the permanent memorials produced among those affected. The memorials were found to be an important part of grief and mourning, helping to mark the transitions of time and status for individuals and communities. This chapter explores memorial ceremonies organized locally by the affected communities and ceremonies organized by the Thai government. Distinctions were found to have occured in the exclusion and inclusion of participants, the significance paid to religion and the politicization of the ceremonies.
