ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the case study method, which involves the study of a single case, or a small number of cases on the phenomenon of interest, which contrasts with other methods, which generally involve cross-case methods. But cross-case research may be embedded in a case study, for example a study of a single community or club may involve a questionnaire-based survey of residents or members, respectively. These case studies often use multiple methods, including any or all of the other methods. The chapter examines tasks in the design and conduct of case studies, including definition of the unit of analysis and selection of cases. The case study involves a mix of quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis and notes a relatively high activation ratio and above-trend increases in company sales revenue. It presents number of examples of case study research in sport contexts.
