ABSTRACT

The measurement of the underpinning processes of performance has traditionally been an element of experimental approaches where we have been disadvantaged relative to some other disciplines of sport science, such as physiology. Researchers with the statistical know-how should also consider examining multiple independent and dependent variables in more dynamic, multilevel approaches, provided sufficient sample power can be obtained. The field’s early adoption of a cognitive psychology framework has meant the vast majority of work has tended to evolve from cognitive psychology’s underpinning theoretical assumptions and methodological approaches. A coach’s view on the relative efficacy of a particular research finding is tightly calibrated to the skill level of the participants examined. Longitudinal investigations have been identified as a critical “next step” in the field of sport expertise for a significant period of time. A particular feature of the text has been the illustration of the wide variety of scientific disciplines that contribute to our understanding of sport expertise.
