ABSTRACT
For the helpless victims of war's cursed madness there is only the agony of the damned, the unrelieved misery of suspense, hopelessness and dumb despair. The present German submarine warfare against commerce is a warfare against mankind. To charge people with having conspired to do something which they have been engaged in doing most of their lives, namely their campaign against war, militarism and conscription as contrary to the best interests of humanity, is an insult to human intelligence. It is a war against all nations. In the Middle Ages when the feudal lords who inhabited the castles whose towers may still be seen along the Rhine concluded to enlarge their domains, to increase their power, their prestige and their wealth they declared war upon one another. More, the simple living and thrifty people will be the first to recover from a war's waste and all its burdens, and our people ought to be the first recovered.
