ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates the sports behaviour from the perspective of chance using probability analysis. The two important concepts for probability analysis, are stationarity and independence. Optimised decision-making strategies results in maximising a winning outcome. The specific contributions to probability analysis in the aspect of sports investigates football game behaviours. The behavioural actions and behavioural outcomes in sports contests can be investigated using probabilities. The analysis of sports behaviours using probability analysis is commonplace in scientific literature and represents a good basis for describing and explaining the behaviours and outcomes of sports contests. The restrictions and applications of probability analysis for describing sports behaviour and informing subsequent decision making affords competitive advantage to the knowledgeable sports coach and support staff. The concept applied to a penalty shoot-out confirms increasing importance of penalty kicks as the lineup sequence has increasing costs towards a winning outcome.
