ABSTRACT

The focus for Chapter 8 is on the ways in which Kyrgyz Christians seek to live out their new Christian religious identity in the broader Kyrgyz Muslim community. This chapter describes the experience of Kyrgyz Christians in everyday life, drawing on their personal narratives and ethnographic fieldwork. In particular, it argues that religious conversion has led Kyrgyz Christians to reconsider their understanding of Kyrgyzness through the reinterpretation of Kyrgyz values, culture and religious traditions. This chapter focuses on the importance and role of funerals in the Kyrgyz community.
