ABSTRACT

The amalgamation of definition is most appropriate in order to comprehend the creation of subjective realities and ultimately discursive illusions. Illusions originating from people subjective realities become the basis of their everyday interactions and belief systems, and then allow them to maintain their status quo, whether it is cultural, religious, economic or political superiority. Illusions stems from prejudice help to preserve and enforce the power structures in society. Discursive illusions are created through discourse and various modalities when writers and speakers seek legitimation for their representation of reality. Metaphors introduce the discourse of illusion the paradoxical combination of clarity and ambiguity necessary to present a biased and ideological representation of the world as impartial and objective. Metaphors are a useful tool in persuasive discourse since it negotiates between cognition, emotion, triggering emotional connotations. This chapter explains the concept of discursive illusions, proposes multidimensional framework to investigate various forms of discourse of illusion, including the discourses of politics, media and business.
