ABSTRACT

This chapter covers how to collaborate with remote participants more effectively on design studio projects. In the Marines, Sergeants tell their Lieutenants to remember three things to be a successful troop leader: shoot, move, and communicate. The success of any design studio project depends upon logistics handling. Wars, businesses, and holidays succeed or fail because of logistics. The design studio can be done in three different ways: location-based approach, travel-based approach, and remote collaboration. The location-based strategy has drawbacks that can impact the design studio project. By working with a small group of people in the same location, required perspectives may be too narrowly focused. The travel-based approach is the preferred way to do design studios. The participants are included by using a remote collaboration strategy. Finally a side-by-side comparison of the advantages and disadvantages with each approach is made. The chapter also presents best practices for working with remote participants.
