ABSTRACT

Shooting and editing digitally has many advantages and one that is often overlooked is metadata. The term simply means "data about data", and in this context it means information within the signal other than the actual images. The metadata information associated with each frame may have four parts: Time in hours, minutes, seconds and frames, user bits, control bits, synchronisation word. The metadata associated with a particular video clip or still photo has the capacity to store a wide range of information and these uses are constantly growing, especially in the areas of visual effects (VFX), motion control and 3D. The timecode slate needs to be synchronized to the audio recorder so the slate is most often jammed from the timecode generated by the audio equipment. In some cases, the timecode might come from a different source, such as a timecode generator.
