ABSTRACT

The concept of style is an important one in theatre, yet it can be very confusing because the word style has so many

meanings. In all art forms, when we talk about style we can be

referring to several different things. We might be referring to

a historical style , the aesthetic conventions of a particular historical time period, such as the Renaissance. Or we might use

the word style to refer to the artistic traditions of a particular

location, culture, or nation, such as Japanese or African

style. The word can also be used to describe the individual

artistic look or feel of a particular artist. We can say a piece

is Rubenesque or Picasso-esque when discussing a work that

contains some of the visual characteristics that are inherent in

the artist’s personal style. Style can also be used to identify a

particular artistic technique, such as pointillism, abstraction, or

photorealism, or be used to associate a group of artists whose

style shares common characteristics, such as the impressionists,

pre-Raphaelites, cubists, or expressionists.
