ABSTRACT

Students and families like to read and listen to folk tales and fairy tales. Old stories can help students think about things in new ways, teach a lesson, demonstrate an important value, or simply entertain. This event includes a whole group activity that reminds families of the tales they know, a student creative drama presentation, and activities for the primary and secondary grades that reinforce reading and writing. Families will read a list of clues about well-known fairy tales, talk together about the stories, and find the clue that has nothing to do with the story. They also may draw a picture of one of their favorite tales. The skills reinforced include identifying central themes, main ideas, and details. Prior to Stories and Tales Family Night, select one class to give a creative dramatic presentation of a short fairy tale. Creative dramatics do not require fancy costumes or formal scripts. Students interpret a story with just a few key props.
