ABSTRACT

Dr. Seuss's birthday is celebrated every March in many schools as national Read Across America Day or Dr. Seuss Day. Now, families can join the festivities. Participants will stretch their imaginations as they enter the remarkable world that Dr. Seuss created. This event includes a whole-group activity to create an unusual zoo, a student performance as a reader's theater, and activities for families and students in the primary and intermediate grades based on Dr. Seuss's books. Family members will create an original, wacky animal inspired by characters from the book If I Ran the Zoo by Dr. Seuss. The Teacher-Leader may enlarge one or two animals from If I Ran the Zoo for students and families to see as inspirations for creating their own animals. The Teacher-Leader will exhibit the family's animals around the room in a Zoo on the Wall, and then read aloud If I Ran the Zoo.
