ABSTRACT

Various devices were used to encourage co-operation. In the author own career within the changing education system, the author sought to harness both competition and co-operation. A newly formed University of the First Age for youngsters in school holidays was supported by a large grant from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation with a focus on teacher development to help extend styles of teaching and learning. The fascinating contributions on co-operative schools and the co-operative movement illustrate the recent growth of co-operative education and school trusts which are so immediately appealing to educators, parents and school leaders with their strong moral purpose and determination to create a better society. London schooling, especially the secondary sector, in 2002 was a 'basket case' or so supposed the combined opinion of press and politicians. Hence the London Challenge, a focused programme of school collaboration and improvement.
