ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book proposes a model of cognition as distributed in a functional loop which includes the brain, other people, and technologies. It also presents the specific assistive technology for supporting learning numeracy mental functions of determination, approximation, and manipulation of mathematical symbols and processes. The fact that Assistive Technology for Cognition (ATC) only augments a limited subset of the cognitive functions offers a challenge to neuropsychologists and technologists to develop ATC to address the functions thus far neglected. The book reviews some potentially useful lines for development for future ATC and also considers some of the challenges facing ATC as it moves into the future. Thus, future ATC should be considered not only in relation to the individual user, but also in relation to the user's social network and how that network will support, or resist, the new technology.
