ABSTRACT

THE EXPERIMENTAL BASIS II may be regarded as situated in a stream of ether which, if it were unaffected by the air and glass through which it passes, would travel through them with velocity v in the direction of the light. We know, however, that ether is not unaffected by matter, so let us suppose tha.t the velocities of the ether-stream through air and glass, respectively, are (XIV and (XIV, where (Xl and (XII are fractions depending on the unknown degree in which the two materials may retard the motion of ether.
