ABSTRACT

From New York the author went straight to Chicago and stayed a few weeks in the Michelson's lovely house. Then he moved into a room in one of the student's dormitories. It was one of the most miserable places he has ever lived in, comparable only with German military barracks: filthy, bleak, depressing. Sister Annie was deeply shocked, but could not object after she was told that the two young people were engaged to be married. It all went very quickly, and it gave the signal for all of them; at the end of one year most of them were engaged or married. First came the crazy but enjoyable year in the house El Bokarebo. In the spring, 1913, Hedi and author became engaged, and he spent many weekend that summer visiting her at Leipzig, where her father was professor, and later at Bad Pyrmont, where she was sent to strengthen herself for matrimony. Their wedding was in Grunau.
