ABSTRACT
The author gives an idea of his private life in Berlin during the first Great War. There was a general breakdown involving a shortage of food and other necessities, rationing, queuing. The first indication of what was to come was an order from the Government that a large percentage of pigs should be killed because there was not enough food available for them. The meat was to be preserved and people encouraged to lay in a store. After many inquiries and walking through endless corridors they were shown into a small conference room where the newly established Student's Council was holding its first meeting. Einstein was identified and they were asked to sit down at the end of the conference table until their deliberations were finished. They discussed a general programme on 'Student's Rights', in the same ceremonial manner as the Constitutional Assembly of the French Revolution would have discussed the 'Proclamation of the Rights of Man'.
