ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on Advanced Level Literature or A Level Literature and the key features of Advanced Level Literature specifications. Internal assessment is a feature of A Level and it is also a significant part of IB and Pre-U. The current Assessment Objectives (AO's) for each of the English suite of subjects at A Level signify the key aspects of each of the disciplines. Oxford Cambridge and RSA (OCR) gives status and credibility to the reading of criticism by including one critical text as a 'set text' on its AS unit on narrative texts. It is nothing new for teachers to choose to draw on works of literary criticism and secondary texts to support the study of texts at A Level. The chapter concludes with a brief outline of some of the alternatives to A Level and to literary study, offering an overview of Language and Literature A Levels, the IB, Pre-U and new Creative Writing A Level.
