ABSTRACT

Nuclear power has several advantages over fossil fuels and can also operate in a broader range of geographical locations than sustainable energy sources like hydroelectric, wind, and thermal power. The mining process poses environmental dangers, but so do deep sea oil rigs as seen in the 2010 Deep Horizon disaster. Nuclear power also raises concerns about long-term waste disposal, but it can still generate power more cheaply and with fewer airborne pollutants than coal-fired plants, the perennial bane of global environmental concerns. All modern plants have containment structures and extensive safety systems to monitor problems and prevent catastrophic accidents. Delays resulted in part from the nuclear regulatory authority's dependence on the continued goodwill of the Ministry of Atomic Energy as it planned to expand nuclear power throughout the country, thereby making safety upgrades less desirable when they required temporary shutdowns, as the most serious ones did.
