Clients with complex trauma feel unsafe, are hypervigilant, have diffi culty trusting other people, and have a gloomy outlook on life. Constant vigilance and cautiousness, accompanied by unpleasant or unsafe feelings, is exhausting, so clients would benefi t greatly from feeling safer. Clients are also often overwhelmed by sudden invasive reexperiences, trauma memories, or nightmares. This chapter discusses a number of techniques that can foster a feeling of safety in the present moment and provide some control over trauma cognitions and reexperiences.
