ABSTRACT

A new era began in Noricum with the reign of Diocletian, which brought about changes no less important than those that had resulted from the annexation itself, or from the reforms of Claudius or the Marcomannic Wars. In the south-east, Poetovio and the surrounding area were added to Noricum Mediterraneum, a measure which have already taken effect as part of the Diocletianic reorganisation. The Norican army was completely reorganised under Diocletian and Constantine. Epigraphic and archaeological evidence permits considerable amplification of the picture of the fourth-century Roman army in Noricum obtainable from the Notitia. The success of Christianity in gaining a firm foothold in Noricum was the most important development in the spiritual and intellectual life of the province in the fourth century. The ideological struggle between Christianity and paganism in fourth-century Noricum came into the open at the end of the century, when it took a violent turn, and it was only then that Christianity 'triumphed'.
