ABSTRACT

T. Varius T.jil. Cla. Clemens. CIL 5211 = ILS 1362, CIL 5212 = ILS 1362a, CIL 5213, 5214, 5215 = ILS 1362b, CIL 5216 = II690, 15205, I = AI] 44 (Celeia), also CIL VIII 2728 (18122) = ILS 5795, CIL XVI 117, 183. The tribus is attested by the Tabula Banasitana of A.D. 177 (Comptes-Rendus de I'Acad. des Inscr. et Belles-Lettres 1971,472). Praef. coh. II Gallorum Macedonicae (probably C. A.D. 135), trib. leg. XXX U(lpiae) v(ictricis), praef. equit. al(ae) II Pannoniorum, praef. equit. al(ae) Britannicae miliar., praef. auxi/iorum in Mauret. Tingitan. (in A.D. 145), proc. Aug. provinciarum Ciliciae, Lusitaniae, Mauretaniae Caesar(i)ensis (c. A.D. 151-2), Raetiae (c. A.D. 156-7), Belgicae et utriusq. Germ., ab epistulis Augustor. (c. A.D. 163)' See esp. Pflaum, Carrieres I 368 ff. no. 156 with bibliography. He later perhaps became a senator, because his name is mentioned in the Tabula Banasitana before that of M. Bassaeus Rufus, who between 169 and 180 received the ornamenta consularia (cf. Appendix V, p. 246). From CIL 52II it is clear that Clemens was a citizen of Celeia. For Varii in this town see also CIL 5267 (II695), II699 = ILS 3301, CIL 14368,6 (also slaves and probably freedmen of the family). They are also attested at Virunum (CIL 4778 + 4785, p. 2328,44 = ]OAI 18 (1915) 123 ff.). They were perhaps descendants of an Italian merchant family which had a branch on the Magdalensberg (cf. Car. 153 (1963) 108 no. 97 and Egger, Grosshandelsplatz no. 291 with Varii). 274

T. Attius C.jil. Tutor. CIL 5331 = ILS 2734 = Modrijan-Weber 66 ff. (Solva), see also CIL VII 386 = RIB 830, CIL VII 390 = RIB 837, CIL VII 394 = RIB 842. Praef. coh. I Betas. c.R., trib. mil. leg. II ad. pj., praef. alae I Tung. Frontonian., praef. alae I Batavor. miliar., and in addition (not necessarily before his military posts) dec. FI. Solva. See esp. E. Bidey, Car. 143 (1953) 249 no. 22, according to whom the career started at earliest in A.D. 161. The Attii owned the most expensive house in second-century Solva, opposite the forum buildings, see the inscription ]GAI(B) 19/20 (1919) 145; on the Solva family cf. CIL 5319 = ES 8 (1969) 4 ff. no. 8 with one of the honestiores. The Attii, Tutor hirnself in particular, will have owned land in the Solva area, see esp. CIL 5310 = AI] 102 (Hoce) with one Primi genius T. Alti lib. and CIL 5445 = ES 8 (1969) 15 no. 20 (Gratwein) with one [Acc]eptus Alti [Tut?]oris servus. Cf. also CIL 5447 (Kleinstübing) and 5520 (Friedberg) with further Attii around Solva. The family is also known at Celeia (CIL 5156 with p. 1830, 5243 and 5271 = II696), Juenna (CIL 14366, 3 = Egger, Kirchenbauten 75) and there are isolated cases elsewhere too. Cf. E. Weber, Inschriften no. 178.
