ABSTRACT

The capability of practical reason, when used in the specific context of the transition to university, is focused on whether high school learners and students entering university are able to make meaningful decisions about post-school study and career options. Relatively few learners and students made specific reference to issues of bodily integrity. This was the capability where the fewest instances were found in the qualitative data. The final capability included in the ideal-theoretical list for the transition to university was that of language competence and confidence. As such, the importance of including the capability of language competence and confidence in final capabilities list for the transition to university is clear. Without having several of other capabilities included in the ideal-theoretical list, it is unlikely that educational resilience will be achieved. The capability of the emotional health should thus also take account of learners and students confidence and the impacts this has on learning.
