ABSTRACT
The focus of this chapter is to offer a lesson plan template for ELLs that encompasses Common Core aligned instruction, differentiated learning activities and learning outcomes by language level. The metaphor that the author likes to use for lesson planning is a recipe from a cookbook. They are Preliminary Information, Lesson Procedures and Differentiation, and Outcomes and Assessment. The Preliminary Information section informs the other components in the lesson plan. B. Lesson Procedures and Differentiation sections and outlines the how-to section of the lesson plan. A final note about differentiated lesson planning is to recognize at what points Common Core alignment takes place in the template. Finally it demonstrates K-5 differentiated lessons for Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSS) Reading-Foundational Skills using recommended performance tasks developed by the framers of the Common Core. The Academic Learning Goal supplies specific information about this lesson in alignment with the language of the selected Common Core standard.
