ABSTRACT

Forensic mental health is a challenging and complex field of practice. The chapter examines the romantic notion that society provides those leaving the ‘community of custodial care’ with the resources required to transition effectively into the wider community. Questions of restricted citizenship and inclusion in communities post discharge will be examined as will the links between housing, community placement and the impacts of community supervision. The authors explore the loss experienced by the consumer upon leaving the ‘community of the institution’. The concepts raised in this chapter will have implications for how models of service provision are developed and suggest considering a shift from a centralised clinical approach to a more regionalised, holistic method of service provision.
