ABSTRACT

Seafood production, trade and consumption are global in scale. However, the industry exhibits strong geographical variation across the world, and this is central to the challenges faced by the sustainable seafood movement. Starting with a general description of major statistical trends over the last quarter of a century, this chapter outlines the current status of global seafood production and consumption. We give to a general description of the rise of the ‘global’ seafood movement and explore how it influences seafood production and consumption practices in different parts of the world. We conclude with four key global dynamics that influence the role and effectiveness of the kind of global governance initiatives used in to steer sustainability in the seafood sector.
