ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines some of the main features of this stage of life. It also shows why the letters S, T, A, G and E are helpful in understanding the parenting of teenagers. Some people believe that the use of the word 'stage' is insulting to teenagers. The chapter refers briefly to some of the behaviours that mark teenage stage out as different from other stages. There will be times when behaviour will seem to be immature, and what is known as 'adolescent egocentrism' may be one refection of this stage. The beginning of this stage is marked by puberty, a unique process of physical and emotional maturation. It is important to emphasise that an awareness of brain development will be helpful for parents in understanding key aspects of teenage behaviour. Pruning takes place to ensure effective neural connections are created. As part of the pruning process new connections are being formed that will enable new skills to develop.
