ABSTRACT

Moving towards connoisseurship is a continuum of development. It is evolutionary and follows a number of trajectories. Using a model of the stages of the development of connoisseurship which is explained in this chapter, interviews with artists are presented as close-up portraits of this evolution. The portraits were derived after two phases of interviews and they are presented as examples of connoisseurship in progress. The true connoisseur is not necessarily the one at the top of professional hierarchies, that is, the superintendent of schools, but such persons may be principals, coordinators or teachers. Connoisseurship is neither confined nor defined by formal organizational roles; rather it is a capacity of the individual occupying that role. Typically a career educational leader who is upwardly bound thinks about advancement principally in terms of climbing a career ladder based on expanding hierarchical positions in an organization. The chapter reports portraits of three Australian artists, Caitlin, Miriam and Scott and one American artist Alberto.
