ABSTRACT

The Two Row Wampum Treaty is important because it established for all time the process by which we would associate with our White brethren. Native people throughout North America know the Two Row as the grandfather and template for what a just, respectful and sustainable relation between Native Peoples and settlers could and should be, and perhaps still may become, which is the goal of the Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign. The Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign's goals are very similar to those of the Earth Charter. The values embedded in the Charter, the understanding that the global environmental crisis is at its heart a crisis of culture, the commitment to peace, the recognition of the interdependence of people and ecosystems, the assumption that success depends on a change of minds and hearts, and the respect for and recognition of the important role of the United Nations are all shared by the Two Row Wampum and the Earth Charter.
