ABSTRACT

From 2007 to 2012, the environmental agenda in Mexico was consolidated through citizen participation and mainstreaming within the administrative decision-making of the Federal Government. This was accomplished through efforts of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT). The Coordinating Unit of Social Participation and Transparency (UCPAST) was given the central task of directing the efforts, and related actions were coordinated from SEMARNAT State Delegations at the regional level. This chapter will look into this experience to identify some outcomes, lessons learnt and what is still to be accomplished in this regard.
