ABSTRACT

For many policymakers, waste management is the epitome of environmental management. The dumping of solid wastes and the flow of untreated effluents can disrupt sensitive ecosystems, leading to the deterioration of water quality and thus poor human health. The handling of hazardous waste is especially worrying, given the developed countries’ unfortunate trend toward dumping their wastes in developing countries. Related issues include the health problems of people who work in (and, in poor countries, even live on) waste sites.
