G lobal population is growing fast-over 80 million people per year-and has doubled since 1960. Most of that growth is in poor countries. India’s population has passed 1 billion, and India may become the world’s most populous nation within a few decades. Recent projections indicate that the rate of growth is slowing somewhat, but world population is still projected to reach 9 billion within a few decades. This population growth poses considerable challenges for resource and environmental management.
