ABSTRACT

Freedom and order are two fundamental values in symbiotic relationship in a modern society. On the one hand, freedom without order would lead to a life in the jungle where the struggle for survival and domination eventually would threaten freedom, even the lives and property of the people. On the other hand, order without freedom would mean dictatorship, where the rules are not made by the people, but rather are imposed on them. The relationship between economic development and democracy has long been an important subject in democratization literature. From a global perspective, it is much easier to achieve democracy in developed countries than in developing countries. It should be noted that members of the middle class do not support democracy out of naivety. Not only did Lipset specify the relationship between economic development and middle class, but he also argued that the middle class is the main political force supporting democracy.
