ABSTRACT
This chapter explains the methodology behind determining pattern lines. After the positive is finished, and the outer surface layer has been determined, the next step is to determine where the pattern lines should be drawn. Anyone who creates patterns knows that the same sculptural shape can be altered by a variation in the placement, number, and complexity of pattern pieces. The only way to gain that patterning experience and knowledge comes from a willingness to take the time to experiment and play with ways to achieve different shapes. When drawing, keep lines and shapes round and fluid. When determining and drawing pattern lines, use two different colored markers. Continue and draw the same lines onto both sides. When the bigger part of the shape has been divided into sections, move to the smaller areas. When labeling pattern pieces consider adding them after the pattern lines have been drawn and while the pieces are still in place on the positive sculpt.
