ABSTRACT

This chapter explains interaction, pair work and group work on pedagogy essentials. Interaction within the languages classroom is absolutely vital to promote effective learning. It will tend to take place teacher to student or student to student. Pair work is an essential part of teaching languages. Students feel safer when they are talking in pairs. They have to get used to, and feel confident about, the language in a more reassuring environment. Group work can mean anything from three students working together to even half a class working together, depending on the size of your classes. Group work promotes more independent learning, as well as providing opportunities for peer assessment. There will always be parts of a language lesson that will need to be teacher-led. Lessons should also have times in them that are student-led. This is one way to use differentiation in the classroom, inviting perhaps your ablest students to teach other students.
