ABSTRACT

Of course adaptation over time is a natural part of a house's history and many buildings have been altered or extended over the years. Universally, the last major adaptations undertaken were the installation of internal WCs and bathrooms, together with electricity and central heating. In the past, alterations may have been made to buildings because of government taxes such as the window tax. This was first introduced in 1696 and only finally repealed in 1851 and led to the blocking of many windows.
