One of the reasons why this motivation is so important is that our interests play a major role in shaping the way in which we create and interpret our realities. But before discussing how this phenomenon works conceptually, let’s briefly consider a concrete example. Let’s see how it looks in operation. For instance, take the tragicomic story of the compulsive gambler, an accountant who lived in New York City. Beneath the staid surface dwelled a wild risk-taker who lived for games of chance. His primary interest was to hit it big, and he was constantly on the lookout for tips and signs to aid his various gambling enterprises.
