ABSTRACT

I wrote in the introduction that Gestalt is, first of all, a place of welcome. It was a place of welcome right from the start, as we have seen with the ’’group of seven”—that group which was in itself very eclectic and met regularly at the Peris’ home. In addition, the book setting out the basics of Gestalt Therapy was written by three very different people. And finally, it was launched in the United States by Paul Goodman, Fritz and Laura Peris, who all had very different styles. To my knowledge, Gestalt is the only therapy which does not depend on a single charismatic personality: for example Freud for psychoanalysis, Berne for transactional analysis, Reich for the body therapies, etc. Each person comes to Gestalt Therapy with his or her own sensitivity and centers of interest.
