ABSTRACT

This chapter explores relations between affective and continuance commitment combinations and soldier-reported retention intentions, morale, and readiness. Scales developed to measure spouse commitment to the Army showed a factor structure that was comparable to that of soldiers and consistent with the dimensions of affective and continuance commitment. The chapter assesses the factor structure and reliability of affective and continuance organizational commitment scales in a variety of military settings. Although organizational commitment is of vital concern to military organizations, there have been relatively few studies on organizational commitment conducted with military personnel. The expected factor structure of the affective commitment and continuance commitment scales was confirmed in the initial 1994 investigation with the Multinational Force and Observers soldiers. The Sample Survey of Military Personnel is administered twice a year, in the spring and fall, to a sample of Army personnel in grades from private through colonel by the Army Personnel Survey Office at the US Army Research Institute.
