ABSTRACT

Getting stronger is an ongoing theme in this treatment approach, so this chapter could easily have come earlier. Getting-stronger interventions appear all along the way. For example, during the treatment planning conversation, the therapist might ask a younger child, “Do you think that when you get bigger and stronger, you’ll be able to handle this stuff better?” When the child agrees (the common response), the therapist can say, “So one of our goals is to help you to get bigger and stronger.” There are several advantages to focusing on getting stronger:

• It is consistent with the fairy tale model. It emphasizes empowerment and helps to justify a variety of treatment activities.
