ABSTRACT

Director's Chair is a behavioral rehearsal technique that allows children and parents to under stand the role each plays in difficult situations and provides options for better responses. In Director's Chair, the therapist and family members discuss individual and familial strengths that were evident through the scenes. One specific follow-up technique is to create a "prize" for the child after he or she plays the acting game. This follow-up takes place shortly after the game or the first session after the Director's Chair that the family reports the child has engaged in the appropriate behavior at home. Positive reinforcement in this activity is the approval of the parents and clinician when the child behaves appropriately. As aforementioned, this intervention is contraindicated if the parents are likely to respond negatively to children expressing their feelings. The clinician and child create a King/Queen of Good Attitude crown in session.
