ABSTRACT

Clinicians are often asked by parents which discipline methods reap the best results. Many counselors have found the use of natural and logical consequences to be most helpful and suggest their use to parents only to discover less than successful results. The goal of discipline using natural and logical consequences is, first, to promote good decision making and, second, to promote behavior change. Natural consequences are what result naturally from behavior-both good and bad. The parents who are most effective at discipline know when to be quiet. It is important for the therapist to encourage the parents to choose their battles wisely. In other words, know when to leave and let go and when to stand their ground. It is imperative to reiterate that the purpose of using logical consequences is to train children about good and bad choices, not simply to find another way for parents to assert their power.
