ABSTRACT

The purpose of this activity is to externalize the problem for children who are brought to therapy with behavior problems. When working with families who seek therapy for their "problem" children, it is likely that external factors are causing or maintaining the problem. "Externalization" is the process that allows the family to form a cohesive unit, similar to a team, to defeat the problem (White and Epston, 1990). The purpose is to get the family to "fight the problem" instead of fighting each other.
