ABSTRACT

A guiding principle in the field of social psychology has been the powerful influence that other people exert on our beliefs, attitudes, and behav-iors. Although research examples illustrating the influence others have on one s attitudes and behaviors in general are relatively numerous, the influence of other people s beliefs on intergroup attitudes and behaviors (stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination) has not received a great deal of focused theoretical or empirical attention. The present chapter therefore addresses the potential impact of social influence on intergroup beliefs and behaviors.
