ABSTRACT

All things being equal, author prefers picking up street sex workers. Face to face, it takes me but a second to know whether 'chemistry' exists between us. When an escort arrives as a result of a phone or an Internet appointment, a mental adjustment almost always needs to be made. What the client visualized in his mind's eye when speaking to the sex worker on the phone does not conform to what he sees in front of him. This usually holds true even if the worker has a photo in the paper or on the Web. In 1976, he was not yet ready to meet only advertising sex workers. It was not only related to the instant-chemistry issue. The guys listed under the banner of 'Models and Escorts' in the gay press charged twice as much as street hustlers. In those days, to the great chagrin of the management of the St. Francis Hotel, the hustler scene in San Francisco was concentrated on the south side of this establishment, where Geary and Powell Streets intersect.
