ABSTRACT

In the turbulent and ever-changing human services arena, the meaningful involvement of an active, diverse and committed board of directors may be the key to survival for many nonprofit organizations. This article explores the changing role of a nonprofit agency’s board of directors in areas of leadership, planning, strategic affiliations, community development and advocacy. Specific tools and strategies to improve board effectiveness and development to meet the increased demands of a competitive marketplace are recommended.
